Our Lady of Light
On June 21, 1896, Father Louis Brisson, OSFS, revealed to both the Oblate Fathers and Brother and to the Oblate Sisters of St. Francis de Sales devotion to Our Lady of Light which had been so long a living reality for him saying,
I have something in mind that we shall soon put into practice. Every religious order has its own special Madonna. The Benedictines have Our Lady of Hope, the Redemptorists, Mother of Perpetual Help; and I see that this custom exists in every community. Each strives to create a beautiful Madonna. What shall we call Our Lady, my children? We shall call her Our Lady of Light.
The Litany of Our Lady of Light
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. God the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us. God, the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. God, the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us. Our Lady of Light...pray for us Resplendent Daughter of the Father... Radiant Mother of the Son... Ardent Spouse of the Holy Spirit... Virgin clothed with the sun... Virgin crowned with the stars... Virgin raised above the moon... Torch of faith... Beacon of hope... Lamp of charity... Light of confessors... Flame of martyrs... Lusture of virgins... Mary, example of total dedication... Mary, example of openness to the Spirit... Mary, Mother of all Oblates... Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, spare us, O Lord. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, hear us, O Lord. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Let us pray, O Mary, mother of the Savior, spouse of the Holy Spirit, Our Lady of Light, shed upon us the brightness and beauty of the light of your Son, that we may find our way back to our Heavenly Father. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. O Lady of Light, send down the light of the Holy Spirit upon N., our Pope, N., the bishop of our diocese, and all bishops that they may be true shepherds of the flock. Amen. Send the light of the Holy Spirit on all in the ordained ministries, bishops, priests and deacons, that they may serve those to whom they are sent. Amen. Send down the light of the Holy Spirit on all religious women and men. Help them to see their lives as a special mirror of the life of your Son. Amen. Send down the light of the Spirit especially on us, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, who claim you as our special patron. Help us be faithful to our vocation, renewed in spirit, open and generous to one another and to all those to whom we minister. Help us be such that others will come forward to join us. Amen. Send down the light of the Spirit on all those who at this very hour are preparing to leave this world. Brighten the darkness of death and lead them safely to their new and eternal home. Amen. |
